Presbyopia is a common condition that makes it difficult to see clearly without the use of prescription lenses. Here at Roholt Vision Institute, we believe in the value of options that help people live more active lives without having to rely on eyeglasses or contacts. One option is the KAMRA inlay. This treatment is a safe and lasting solution to presbyopia and an excellent way to improve near vision.
The KAMRA inlay is a small, thin ring that is opaque and has an opening in the center, like a donut; or more like a camera aperture. The inlay is inserted in the front of the eye to increase the depth of focus by allowing light only through the center. This results in better near vision without disruption to near or far vision.
The KAMRA Procedure: What to Expect
The KARMA inlay procedure is performed in the office. First, numbing drops are administered into the eye. These take only a few minutes to activate. Next, the ophthalmologist makes a small opening at the front of the eye using a laser. This may feel like slight pressure but lasts only momentarily. The inlay is then precisely positioned within the opening in the cornea. No stitches are needed; tissue will quickly heal over the inlay.
Patients cannot drive right after their procedure. A ride needs to be arranged in advance and patients should not resume driving until they are cleared by their doctor. When the numbing drops wear off after treatment, the eye may feel itchy or irritated. Excessive tearing may occur for a short time and the patient may be more sensitive to light than usual. These are normal side effects that resolve over a few days.
What to Expect After the KAMRA Procedure
Complete healing takes some time. Recovery may vary slightly from one person to another. Some people begin to see an improvement in their vision within a week or two, while others do not notice changes for a month or longer. Still, normal activities can usually be resumed in a day or two after the procedure. Patients can expect vision changes during the first 3 to 6 months after receiving the KAMRA inlay. The structure of light coming into the eye has been changed and the brain may need time to adjust to new signals.
To maximize your recovery and restore near vision more quickly, patients should:
- Refrain from wearing reading glasses
- Use artificial tears and medications as directed by the eye doctor
- Be sure to attend all scheduled follow-up visits so we can check the progress of healing
