Glaucoma Treatment In North Canton, Canfield & Alliance, OH
What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is the second-leading cause of blindness in the United States. The condition usually occurs when pressure in the eye, called intraocular pressure or IOP, is too high. The high pressure damages the optic nerve, thus preventing proper transmission of visual information from the eye to the brain. And unlike cataracts or corneal opacities, once vision is lost from glaucoma, it is not recoverable.

Fast friendly service. Great experience start to finish
Excellent service! I would highly recommend them for cataract surgery or any eye problems. In and out, but not rushed. Dr Wohl is very thorourgh with his diagnosis and surgeries.
I had an issue where my eye became swollen over the weekend and by Monday, I knew it needed to be looked at and was amazed at how quick I was able to get an appt! The staff was wonderful during my visit - and I was lucky to find out it was an allergic reaction which they prescribed meds - highly recommend using this facility for your eye care!!
Very easy surgery. Dr Roholt is an amazing doctor and he has a very calming voice. He walks you through the surgery and makes you feel very comfortable. All the assistants were so nice. Definitely recommend this surgery for anyone it can help. First 4 hours after surgery my eyes were sore. After that they were just a tad foggy. Next day everything was crystal clear except reading up close, it was still foggy. By Sunday morning I can see everything far away like I’m wearing my contacts. Still fuzzy with close up but I was told it will clear up soon. Definitely worth the 4700$

I didn't wait long that's always a plus. The assistant was friendly and courteous. Made me feel welcomed. I got a thorough eye exam from the Doctor . He explained in detail all the questions I asked. I'm sticking with Roholt.
This is by far the best experience I have encountered dealing with specialists in eye care. Everyone was so kind and helpful and was willing to answer any questions I may have had. Susan at the front desk even asked me how things were at my last appointment as I was checking out. She really seemed to care even though she did not any hands on assignments with my care. I was real impressed with all in this office. I will tell everyone about the Roholt Vision institute. I have 20/20 vision in my one eye and 20/25 sin my other..Amazing since I cannot remember when I had those numbers before. I started wearing glasses in 8th grade.
They are always pleasant and help you understand what is happening.
Absolutely #1 I hope everyone can experience this

Quality of service is consistently professional and 5-stars. Overall, excellent. Appointments made later in the day tend to have longer waits, in my observation.
Everything is great, 5 stars ,
I had Photo-Refractive Keratectomy done yesterday. I was nervous about this procedure, but felt prepared through conversation they had with me and paperwork they gave me prior to the procedure. Everyone was very nice. The procedure itself caused very little discomfort. I followed their post-op instructions and had minimal discomfort after the surgery. Slept good and have virtually no discomfort this morning. I would highly recommend Roholt to anyone who needs this procedure.
Great service by all! Everything spelled out what to do, quick on time service, all questions answered.
They were thorough and gave me options. When I'm ready I will definitely use this office.
I really am so impressed with the care I received from Dr. Kubis. He listened to me about my eye health issues and found a solution. He also explained what was happening and what steps he and I would be taking for the long term health of my eyes. I am so glad I found this Optomologist.
My family had a lovely experience with Dr. Mathie today, getting eye exams! The ladies at the front desk(Kisha and Susan) made them feel really welcomed. The technician made them feel like family. We will definitely return.
Always very professional and friendly!
Staff friendly and informative. Visit occurred at scheduled time. Dr. Mathie provided excellent care and offered options for my grandson, Joe.
They have always been informative and courteous
Who Is At Risk For Glaucoma?
Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type. It affects almost 3 million Americans, afflicting men and women equally. But women are 2-4 times more likely than men to get a more acute and more dangerous form called closed-angle glaucoma. People of Asian descent are also at higher risk for closed angle or narrow angle glaucoma. African Americans are at the greatest risk, and according to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, African Americans can expect it to show up earlier and progress faster than in other ethnicities. And if you have a sibling who has been diagnosed with glaucoma, your risk of getting the same diagnosis increases by a factor of 10!
Diagnosis Of Glaucoma

At Roholt Vision Institute, advanced technology like this three dimension rendering of the optic nerve assists the doctor in evaluating the health of the optic nerve.
Any of the aforementioned risk factors are an important reason to be checked regularly. Glaucoma is called “The Sneak Thief of Sight” because it does not have any symptoms until the end stages of the disease and the damage is not reversible. Fortunately, detection has progressed a great deal over the past several decades. We no longer need to wait until peripheral vision has been lost to diagnose glaucoma. New technologies allow for detection of early changes in nerve tissue within the retina. This allows for earlier detection and therefore, a better long-term prognosis for keeping a person’s vision for his or her lifetime.
Is Vision Loss From Glaucoma Preventable?
According to Dr. Brian E Mathie, Clinic Director for Roholt Vision Institute, “In almost all cases, severe vision loss from glaucoma is preventable. With the use of advanced technologies, we can detect it up to 10 years earlier than in years past so the biggest hurdle in most cases is simply getting patients to be examined by their eye care professional so that appropriate and effective treatments can be initiated”. At Roholt Vision Institute, we have advanced technology that measures the functional and structural status of the nerve that can be damaged in glaucoma. These extremely accurate devices quantify the amount of healthy tissue to the thousandth of a millimeter and can also analyze changes that may occur from one year to the next.

Colored graphics demonstrate areas of normal nerve tissue (green), borderline (yellow) and abnormal (red) for all areas of nerve tissue in the center of the retina and surrounding the optic nerve. By comparing these values to expected norms for patients of a given age, doctors at Roholt Vision Institute can determine a relative risk for glaucoma for each individual patient.
Glaucoma Treatment
Once the diagnosis has been made, there are many possible treatments. Most practitioners will start patients on an eye drop that will lower the intraocular pressure in the eye and help prevent further damage to the eye. Several new medications come to market for that exact purpose. Lasers are also an option, as are surgeries on the eye, but those are usually reserved for more severe cases.
According to Dr. Brian Mathie, “there has never been a better time to have glaucoma than today. Thanks to incredible technology and improved treatment options, in most cases patients can expect effective treatment that will afford them very good vision for the rest of their lives.”

Being able to measure the exact values of healthy nerve tissue over time is the most important aspect of monitoring glaucoma for progression or worsening of the disease. State of the art technology allows Roholt Vision Institute to evaluate each exam for any changes in the nerve tissue, however subtle they may be.
Should I Get Tested For Glaucoma?
Scheduling an eye exam to evaluate the intraocular pressure and the health of the optic nerve is important for each and everyone one of us, but especially important for people who have risk factors such as a family history of glaucoma, African Americans, the elderly and anyone who has a history of elevated pressure in the eye.
